About the Company
Optain is a revolutionary healthcare company that uses groundbreaking software and hardware technology to rethink care. We use the eye as a window to the body to improve the way we detect and manage eye and systemic conditions. Optain is committed to expanding and improving care through the introduction of AI and machine learning technology frontline care settings at an accessible price. This not only promotes greater access to care, but promises to reduce the strains of overburdened healthcare systems.
Originally founded in Australia in 2019, Optain seeks to commercialize the inventions of Professor Mingguang He, a preeminent clinician-scientist and scholar in the field of ophthalmology. Optain has achieved regulatory approval and commercial adoption of its product suite in global markets, including Australia, Europe, and more.
In 2025, Optain received US FDA clearance for its Resolve retinal camera. Optain also recently closed a Series A funding round led by Insight Partners with participation from seven leading U.S. health system investors, including Memorial Hermann Health System, Northwell Health, Novant Health, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and UPMC. These systems collectively deliver care to 28 million patients across 25 states and have begun deploying Optain's platform across their networks, rapidly accelerating the company's footprint and expanding screening access nationwide. Optain also acquired EyePACS, a teleophthalmology platform with a 15-year history and an established network of licensed optometrists and ophthalmologists who read retinal images for diabetic retinopathy screening.
About the Job
As the Clinical Operations Manager, you will own the operations of Optain's provider network -- the optometrists and ophthalmologists who read retinal images for health systems, clinics, and community health centers across the United States. The network has run for 15 years on the judgment and relationships of a small number of people. Your job is to turn that into documented policy, a measurable quality program, a capacity model that runs ahead of demand, and a governance rhythm in alignment with Optain’s Medical Director. You will report to the VP of Operations and work day to day with Optain's Medical Director. This is a non-clinical role for someone who has managed a network of contracted clinicians before, writes policy that physicians sign, and knows the difference between running a process and building one that doesn't need you.
Optain is at an inflection point. We have FDA clearance, a growing camera footprint, and a commercial pipeline that is moving fast. Behind every screening exam is a licensed grader reading the images through our EyePACS platform, and the operational infrastructure around that network is being built in real time. This role sits at the center of that work.
This is a remote, US-based position.
What You'll Do
• Own the grading playbook, SOPs, onboarding materials, and the provider network policy library -- author, version, and maintain them, and route clinical content to the Medical Director for review and sign-off.
• Establish documentation governance for the network -- ownership, versioning, review cadence, and sign-off -- so operating knowledge lives in documents rather than in individuals.
• Design and run the grader quality program, including sampling, over-read and discordance review, turnaround accountability, and performance feedback -- establish error rates and trends where today review is periodic and manual.
• Prepare quality reviews and escalations for Medical Director adjudication and carry out the resulting actions, including performance conversations and offboarding.
• Build and maintain a capacity model by state, customer, and license coverage, and set recruitment triggers ahead of turnaround breaches.
• Run the grader recruitment pipeline from sourcing through interview and recommendation, working with the Operations Manager on credentialing and onboarding execution.
• Own intake, triage, and routing of customer and grader complaints, including urgent findings workflows -- route clinical questions to the Medical Director, close the loop with the customer, and trend issues over time.
• Set the agenda, prepare decisions, and follow through so the Medical Director's time goes to clinical judgment rather than logistics.
• Partner with Product and Engineering on platform improvements that reduce manual work, including documenting current-state workflows so feature development is accurate and fast, and contribute network measurables to the weekly grader operations rhythm and company scorecard.
What You'll Need
• 5+ years in healthcare operations, with 2+ years managing a network of contracted or affiliated clinicians -- telehealth, teleradiology, or virtual care strongly preferred over traditional medical group or IPA settings.
• Has written clinical or operational policy that a physician leader signed, and maintained it afterward.
• Has run or materially contributed to a clinical quality, peer review, or provider performance program.
• Prior experience operating a clinician network under a medical director's clinical oversight is a strong plus.
• Exposure to credentialing, medical staff services, or multistate clinician licensing is a plus; teleophthalmology background is a plus, not a requirement.
• Experience participating in product discovery or operationalizing new feature launches is a plus.
• Comfortable building and reading operational dashboards and capacity models in spreadsheets or BI tools.
• Startup experience is strongly preferred -- you have built a process where little existed and can show the result.
• Clear, direct written communicator who is comfortable working with physicians as a non-clinician.
• Has driven adoption of new processes across teams without direct reporting authority.
• US-based, comfortable with remote work and occasional travel for team offsites and customer engagements.
What Success Looks Like in Year One
• The grading playbook, onboarding materials, and network policy library are current, versioned, and signed, with a documented review cadence.
• A grader quality program is running, with error rates and turnaround trends reported monthly and at least one full cycle of performance feedback completed.
• A capacity model by state and customer is in use, and recruitment is triggered by the model rather than by turnaround breaches.
• A complaint intake and escalation process is documented and running, with clinical questions routed to the Medical Director.
• The Medical Director's time goes to clinical decisions, with decision prep and follow-through owned by this role.
• At least two manual network processes have moved into the platform in partnership with Product and Engineering.
